Chilean Glory Flower - Eccremocarpus scaber

This vigorous climber, with its bright orange, bell-shaped flowers in mid-summer, can grow up the side of a porch, a wall or around a doorway in one season.

GENERAL CARE. This is an easy plant to grow. Although it is a half-hardy perennial that could go on from year to year in a protected spot, it is usually grown from seed annually.

Potting: Plant out seedlings in a soil-based potting compost. Sow seeds in a good seed compost. Sow seeds indoors in March or April and plant out when all chance of frost has passed.

WATERING. Chilean Glory Flower needs generous watering in summer. Water daily on hot, sunny days. If kept through winter water sparingly, giving just enough water to moisten the compost.

Feeding: Use a standard liquid fertilizer once a week throughout the growing season.

CONDITIONS. Light: This plant needs a bright, sunny and sheltered position.

Temperature: Normal outdoor summer temperatures are fine for this plant. If keeping it through the winter, place in a cool area where the temperature will not fall below 13°C (55°F).

Buying Tips. When to buy. Buy seeds in winter or early spring from local garden centres and nurseries or by mail order from catalogues.

What to look for - Choose seeds that have been packaged for the current season.

Lifespan - This plant is a perennial that, given the right conditions, can go on for some years but it is normally grown as an annual.
